The Des Moines Building Restoration Project
The vacant Des Moines Building is located on 405 Sixth Avenue of downtown and has become a public nuisance. The city has decided to find a developer to restore the property.

The property covers 150,000 square feet and the city is trying to claim legal title for it in order to begin restorations. The project is estimated to cost between $15 to $20 million. The city plans on receiving several proposals to select the best developer for the job.

City records state that many property developers have already shown interest in this project. The city will arrange a public hearing to announce the building's sale after receiving a suitable proposal.

The city filed for a district court judgment in January, claiming that it should receive the building’s title because it is abandoned property. The city’s records indicate that it should be able to obtain the legal title for the property within two to six months. According to city documents the costs for utilities and maintenance will be transferred during the time of conveyance. Developers can contact Andrea Hauer at the Office of Economic Development regarding inquiries about the project.
